Bad Drinking Habits

It wasn't me - honest!
Pictures a bit blurry - he was going wild at the time!

Last night we had all gone to bed and were just settling down for the night when there was suddenly a very loud splashing sound. Toby shot out of his bedroom to see what the noise was - I couldn't stop laughing as I knew exactly what it was. Yes, Hugo was drinking out of the toilet!!

When I got up at about 5.30am this morning (it's an age thing!) Hugo was fast asleep on the landing with a brand new toilet roll, slightly soggy and squashed, alongside him - think he wanted it for a pillow!

Needless to say the toilet lid stays down from now on and the new toilet rolls are out of reach!

Hope to take Hugo to dog training classes this week so will see if we can start to gain some control!

Destruct-O-Dog!

Yesterday Hugo was so excited to see me when I got home from work he bought me the brand new sat-nav with only a few holes in the leather pouch - fortunately the sat-nav itself was fine! I took it off him and he immediately leapt on the kitchen towel and bought that to me instead - just remember he is terrified of towels! He had also had a go at digging up Daniel's vegetable bed again.

Today I got home to find Hugo between the front door and the child gate standing on a chewed up door mat and holding one of Remie's shoes in his mouth - he had managed to pull the gate towards him and get through it. In the living room was one of my slippers, amongst the debris of his toy box and the flowerpots from the garden. I went upstairs to see what else he had done, found Martin's pillow on the floor with his pyjamas alongside and one of his shoes across the room. A magazine had been ripped to shreds, my other slipper had had a bobble chewed off and one of my pens was in bits. I then found an empty toilet roll holder on the landing so checked the bathroom to see if he had emptied the bin - there were reams of toilet paper hanging from the roll in use with chew marks in them. Trouble is, he is so excited to see me it is very hard to get angry with him.

I then took him in the car to go and pick up Toby from college and walked him round the park before Toby came out - he was a nightmare pulling on the lead wanting to go and play with all the other dogs in the park. Won't be going there again in a hurry. I've been trying to get him into dog training classes but everyone seems full until mid-late September so I will have to have a go at some lessons in the garden I think.

Feeling Better

Was woken up at midnight by 'a noise' and thought it was Hugo so went downstairs only to find it was Daniel & Remie who had just come in - Remie had bought a Frisbee with her and Hugo was having a good go at destroying it!

Got up at 6am and went to give Hugo his painkillers - they are ENORMOUS! Put them in a small cake (don't ask me how I know he likes them) and gave it to him. Cake crumbled, tablet fell on floor, tried scooping back up with more cake, crumbled again, Hugo picked up tablet, crunch, crunch, crunch, mmmmm nice, gone! Bit easier than Sid who could spit one across the room. Then took him for a walk along the canal and he seemed as bright as a button.

He is quite sore but seems to be coping quite well. He has even been playing shake-and-pull with one of his rope toys and has jumped up on the settee. Seems to perk up no end when given bits of roast turkey so think he might play the sympathy card when he can.

He seems more concerned about one of his ears at the moment so think he has got a grass seed in there - tried looking with a torch but he isn't very helpful.

Hugo's Bad Day!

Hugo went to the V.E.T today to be D.O.N.E! He is now feeling very sorry for himself, as you would expect. He was also micro-chipped, had his nails cut and had a nasty tick removed from his face - he wouldn't let us near it.

He has sometimes gone lame on his back leg and holds it off the ground for a few seconds before continuing doing whatever he was doing so I asked them to check for hip  dysplasia while he was under the anaesthetic - the x-ray confirmed he had got mild to moderate dysplasia so we will have to watch his weight in the future. He is now 36.5 kg so has put on 2.5 kg since May.

When we went to collect him the nurse came down first carrying the largest plastic funnel you have ever seen to stop him chewing on his poorly places ( he had a cannula in his front leg as well which they had trouble getting in because he would not let them, hence rather a lot of blood!). He hasn't had to wear it yet as he has just slept since we got him home but I'm sure he will just think it's another flower pot and try and eat it! Cooking him some fresh turkey breast for his tea - time for pampering I think.

Going loopy!

Took Hugo for a nice long walk along the canal this evening - managed to dodge the rain clouds too. He was a total nightmare, pulling really hard as he was so excited but he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Met his friend Hooch, the 9 week old chocolate Labrador on the way home so had a play together for a few minutes.

Hugo loves Remie and he goes absolutely crazy when he sees her - the clip is after she has been here for about 10 minutes and he has calmed down a bit!

Sparkling water

Couldn't believe it when we spotted Hugo guzzling the water from the fountain in the pond - perhaps he prefers sparkling water to still! Must taste a bit fishy though.

Rain!

The rain does not deter Hugo from going out for a walk so Martin has just got soaked taking him round the block - he likes playing with a chocolate Labrador puppy called Hooch and a boxer called Pepsi but he absolutely HATES Ozzie who is a mastiff cross - the feeling is mutual.  Funnily enough Sid couldn't stand him either.

After he came back from his walk Hugo insisted on going out in the garden where he had a long drink from the puddles on the patio and then found fresh running water coming out of the drain pipe - he has got a lovely bowl of fresh clean water in the house - honest!

Bones!

Daniel bought Hugo a treated bone today. It was all but gone in about 20 minutes - makes you realise what damage he could do if he really put his mind to it.

Toby and I were in the shed earlier and Hugo came in with us - couldn't believe it when he climbed up on the coffee table and just stood there! (should explain the shed is kitted out with sofa, chairs and a wood-burner).

Going swimming!

Drying off!
Daniel took Hugo down the Meadows this afternoon - Hugo stood on the edge of the river bank which gave way beneath him and he fell in the water. He had to be hosed off when he got home as he was covered in mud.

Trouble is, Hugo doesn't like towels or hair dryers and would rather dry off by sitting on someone's lap, thank you very much!

House smells of wet dog now, lovely!

Of course, Hugo isn't allowed on the sofa!

Moulting!

Brushed Hugo with the Furminator this morning - this might look like a lot of hair but it is only a fraction of what has been coming off him!  Hopefully, he is coming to the end of his moult.

Had to keep chasing him round as he wasn't too keen but he looks a lot sleeker now.

Toby want to know why the hair is grey when Hugo is brown and white.

Hair & Harness

Well, it's been over a week now since I last posted on here - not because Hugo has been super-good but more because he hasn't done anything different from normal!

Hugo is having a major 'blow' at the moment - actually it's more like a full scale hurricane with a bit of tornado thrown in for good measure. There is white hair everywhere - black trousers are out of the question as they just act like a magnet. Was very impressed, though, by one purchase we made last weekend on the recommendation of Marie from the Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust. It is a special comb called a Furminator and it's absolutely brilliant - you gently pull it over Hugo's coat and simply handfuls of undercoat come out, so reducing the need to hoover from every five minutes to ten! Why didn't anyone tell me about it when we had Sid?

At the same time we bought a new harness to try and stop Hugo pulling when we walk him and it seems to be working quite well - we have got a Haltie that goes over his nose but he keeps pawing at it and gets it off. There is a sort of handle in the middle of his back which you can grab hold of if he starts to pull towards another dog so you have much more control which is great.

Daniel has been home this week so has been walking him every day and Hugo is looking a bit slimmer because of it. Unfortunately, it means I don't walk him when I get home so it's having the opposite effect on me!

Another one bites the dust!
We also bought him a new teddy this weekend - a proper one for dogs - it's done quite well and lasted 5 days but it's stuffing has now joined Hugo's hair on the carpet! Think a trip to the charity shop is in order.

I am now officially a co-ordinator for the Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust dealing with new dogs wanting re-homing  - question is, am I strong enough not to give in to those big brown eyes if one (or two, or three) is desperate for a new home? Think Hugo would love it if we did but I might just have to get a divorce first!!!

Hugo's First Bus Ride!

Daniel & Remie took Hugo for a walk to town today and then came home on the bus - it cost them 80p for his fare so think he counts as a child. He looks quite at home here but not so sure what the other passengers thought.

Can't help wondering what state the seat was in when he got off as everywhere he touches at the moment is covered in white hair - Akita people refer to this as 'blowing'!

Apparently the bus driver was really interested - all the drivers at the depot had been looking at Hugo whilst they were waiting at the bus stop and were having bets as to what breed he was.

Ticks!!

This morning I suddenly spotted that Hugo had a tick just beside his eye - it didn't seem to bother him at all until we started approaching him with a pair of tweezers! He managed to wrinkle his face up every time we went near him and hide it in the folds of his skin - he wasn't in the least bit aggressive when we held him down but he was VERY STRONG and two of us couldn't hold him.

I had seen something recently about ticks and fleas on the Akita Rescue & Welfare forum so posted on there asking if anyone had used Lavender or citronella oil as I'd heard both could be used on dogs. After a few minutes I had several replies with a variety of suggestion - they really are a friendly bunch on there - so the first thing I tried was putting liquid soap over the tick and leaving for an hour. This didn't seem to work so we went out to buy a tick remover which we couldn't get and some lavender oil. The pet shop recommended smothering Vaseline over the beastie and leaving for 24 hours.

When we got home I duly plastered the tick with the Vaseline and put some Lavender oil drops on the back of Hugo's neck and above his tail. We then went off for our usual walk and were out for over an hour. Suspect is was probably along the canal where he picked it up from in the first place so will have to be careful in future.

When I went to check on the tick it had gone!! Don't know what it was that worked but something did and all natural products too.

Added Bonus - Hugo now smells quite good, if a little bit like an old lady, and I keep getting wafts of lavender rather than the usual windy smells he emits!

Growing Up

Hugo actually started cocking his leg today - admittedly not very high but his foot was definitely off the ground. Thought he was going to wee like a girl forever!!

He really is the nosiest dog going - here he is looking out of our bedroom window because the neighbour opposite had visitors!

Come on Mum!

Come on Mum, I'm ready to go for a walk - hurry up!

Got home from work this afternoon to find Hugo being sick in the garden and a very dazed looking frog sitting near by so suspect he'd tried to make it play with him!

Walking with Tinker

Got home from work today to find Hugo had been playing with Martin's shoes - I've been nagging at him for years not to leave them down the side of the chair so perhaps he'll start putting them away now - thanks Hugo! Fortunately, no damage done.

When I was clearing up the debris I spotted a squished red thing in the carpet and realised it was the one and only strawberry from the tub in the garden. Only yesterday Daniel had laid claim to it as it wasn't quite ready. Obviously Hugo thought different!.

Went for a nice walk with Jenny and Tinker tonight, along the canal, down the cycle track and back over the cricket pitch. Tinker has always gone slightly loopy when she gets on the pitch and tears backwards and forwards. Not to be outdone Hugo joined in too and Jenny and I ended up being tied to each other and could hardly stand for laughing so much. They had a wonderful time and we will definitely take them there again. On the way home Hugo found every gap he could to get down the bank to the canal to have a drink so think Tinker wore him out - probably not for long though.

Getting a bit naughty now!

Hugo is getting a bit of a handful when he's out walking now and is pulling quite badly on the lead so we have bought a Haltie collar which had improved him no end.

He was rather naughty yesterday and ate a pair of my sandals - someone forgot to shut the bedroom door when we went out - fortunately they were an old pair! How can you be cross when you see that face though?

The flowerpots now seem to live in his toy box and I removed 9 from the living room yesterday! I have given up trying to have a nice garden this year - less stressful and hopefully he'll grow out of it by next year.

Playing and Walking

Hugo is the most loving natured dog and likes nothing better than to sit along side you and be cuddled - he is very playful, as our house can bear testimony to, the front doormat is being re-shaped on a daily basis - he has a passion for flowerpots and doesn't care if anything is growing in them if he wants to play with them!

Next door have three children and we have always been plagued by their footballs coming over the fence but Hugo has sorted that problem out by ripping them up as soon as they come over - funnily enough he has several footballs of his own which he dribbles about the garden but has never damaged at all.

Hugo is now enjoying 3-4 walks a day and is very happy to meet new dog friends. Today I walked for the first time with my next door neighbour and her Jack Russell, Tinker - we used to walk daily with them with Sid, our old dog. He was overjoyed to see her and kept batting at her and leaping all around. We went for a nice walk along the canal and they seem to be getting on well so hope it continues.

One of Hugo's favourite toys is a bit of old carpet that he loves to shake and pull strands out of. He is also very partial to drinking out of one of the water features on the decking. We have to keep topping this up all the time otherwise it makes a strange burring sound!

Hugo is Ours!

Just had an email from the Akita Rescue & Welfare people to say we have been passed to adopt Hugo! Immediately sent off payment for £150 (the AR&W fee) and completed and returned the adoption papers.

Didn't think he was going anywhere else fast anyway.

Oh, Happy Day!!

Missing Cushion

We had a visit from Teckles this evening to do our home visit so, hopefully, be setting the adoption wheels in motion.

While the girl was here Hugo discovered the cushions on the chairs out in the garden and found them rather interesting to carry around so I took them off him and he trotted back in the house - end of story, or so I thought. When she had gone I went to put everything away for the evening and realised a cushion was missing. We searched high and low and even looked over the fences to see if it had been dragged over by something. Eventually spotted it in the bottom of the pond!! Will have to remember to look there the next time something goes missing.

Gardening!

Hugo had his second set of injections on Tuesday so he’s all legal now. When he was weighed the first time two weeks ago he was 28kg (4 and a half stone) – this week he is 32kg (5 stone) so he has put on half a stone in a fortnight.

He’s very much a puppy and plays with all sorts of things – when I hang the washing on the line he’s running off with the pegs and I’ve come out to find things pulled off the line! Daniel put compost in one of our wooden raised beds yesterday evening (it’s on the patio) and then planted up some lettuce and other bits and pieces he has been growing. When I went out this morning there were 3 big footprints in the soil! Don’t think he realised the bed was there and he didn’t really do any damage – he was quite interested in the sticks Daniel had put in to mark the rows though!

Daniel took Hugo down the meadows tonight and Toby took him to the pub this afternoon so both of them are showing far more interest than they did with Sid which is great. Hugo goes mad when he sees Remie and usually has one of his ‘mad five minutes’ when she appears. We haven’t had anything else disrupted in the house this week – he’s concentrating on the gardening!

Hugo at Home

I came home from work tonight to find the living room looking like this!!

What could I do put stand there and laugh and reach for the camera! No harm was done but think Hugo thought the green carpet was an extension of the lawn.

Fortunately, these pots didn't have anything in them because we did catch him trying to pick up the newly planted runner bean containers the other day.

I think Hugo feels well and truly at home now!

First Week

We took Hugo to the Vet tonight and he has had his first set of injections and flea/worm treatment. The vet checked him over and said his heart was sound and his teeth were lovely. He is not underweight (he seems to have filled out in the last two days!) and he weighs 29kg. We go back in a fortnight for his second set of jabs and will arrange castration and chipping at 10-12 months. I mentioned to the vet that his ankles seemed a bit weak - he turns them over quite easily, back and front, when playing - but he thought it was just because he hadn't been walked much and needed strengthening and didn't think it was hip displacer. In actual fact even in the couple of days we have had him they seem much stronger and I swear he has grown already!

Hugo has a lovely temperament and is very gentle, even when taking food. He is a bit food obsessed (with our food I mean) -  I don't particularly like making a big issue out of this but find if you stare him out he will look away and then lie down - sometimes we put his food down in another room whilst we have ours and this seems to be working well.

Today was our first day back at work and, unfortunately the one we are out longest for - we did deliberately leave him on his own for an hour or so yesterday and he was fine - he was on his own for just over 6 hours today and we are really pleased he didn't destroy anything or appear stressed out. He had emptied his toy box and obviously been playing with them but nothing else was out of place. I did phone my neighbour at lunchtime and she had heard him whine once but after she called out to him she didn't hear a thing. He shouldn't be left more than 3 hours at a time for the rest of the week so he should learn we ARE coming back soon.

Hugo's First Day

Bright and early on Saturday 5th May, 2012, Martin (my OH), Toby (my younger son who is 19) and I set off to Tamworth Services to collect Hugo who was due to arrive at 10am. We arrived in plenty of time and had not been there long when I received a text from Mark, his current owner, to say he was there in a high top silver transit van. We spotted the van and eagerly rushed over trying to get our first glimpse of our new furry friend. Mark opened the back of the van and pulled Hugo out.

Having being used to the size of Sid, Hugo seemed quite small in comparison but was lovely and clean looking with beautifully white teeth. He was very frightened and immediately started weeing everywhere so Toby took him over to the patch of grass on the side of the service area and ran him up and down while I got Mark to complete the paperwork. He seemed to take to us all straight away and, when the paperwork was done, I led Hugo away whilst Mark drove off - Hugo did not even look at him as he went.

We lifted Hugo in to the back of our car and settled him in. Toby was in the back and dropped down the seats alongside him so Hugo could be in contact with him. For most of the journey he stood on Toby's lap looking out of the windows. He seemed to enjoy watching all the cars and we suspect he had never had this stimulation before, especially if he was only ever confined to the back of the transit van with no windows. We don't know whether it was excitement or nerves but, boy, did he suffer from wind!!

To break the journey on the way home we stopped off at my parents in Pedmore and spent an hour there. Hugo was as good as gold and took to my mum right away - perhaps the biscuits had something to do with it! He lay down quite happily and seemed pleased to be with people.

After we had had our break we set off for home and arrived back in Ebley at about 1pm. Hugo seemed a bit scared at going into the house (more weeing) but eventually went in and straight out to the garden. The pictures here are all taken whilst he was exploring the garden. (Yes, the lawn does need cutting and those are stinging nettles by the pond - they are to attract the butterflies - cough, cough!)

Hugo took to the garden straight away and quickly found an old football and a tennis ball lurking in the borders - we were amazed to find that he could dribble a football quite nicely and actually would fetch a tennis ball back to us. This is most un-Akita-like  as they normally look at you as if you are stupid when you keep throwing the ball away and almost say "If you want it, you go and get it!" They are far too intelligent for this game!

Hugo was into everything and was soon exploring every nook and cranny, in to flowerpots and in the pond. Of course, just like Sid, he quickly discovered the water in the pond tasted far nicer than any we could provide in a bowl and it had the added attraction of little gold coloured creatures darting in and out of the water lilies. Unlike Sid, though he did not stand at the edge and lean in for a drink, no, he had to stand with all four feet balanced on one of the Cotswold stone boulders round the edge and we had visions of him plunging head first into the water at any moment!  He also seemed to quite enjoy the strings of blanket weed he sucked up - oh, yes he seemed quite at home already.

Hugo was very hungry and ate all the food we put down for him quite quickly. He did feel a little on the skinny side and you could feel all his ribs and back bone which worried me a little. We did think that perhaps he hadn't had enough meals each day because of the long hours his previous owners had worked. If you work 16 hours a day you can't possibly fit in the recommended three meals a day that a dog of Hugo's age would need, unless you got up in the middle of the night of course!
Because Hugo had  not been vaccinated he should not really be allowed out to mix with other dogs - the pads of his feet were very soft so he had obviously not been walked to any extend on anything other than grass, although he seemed to accept a collar and lead without any fuss at all. Martin did take him for a quick walk around the block but he did not do anything when out and waited until he was home.

We were quite amused to find that Hugo still wees like a girl! He just stands there (or, very often, keeps walking) and lets go. Funny because as Sid got older he found it too much of an effort to cock his leg and did exactly the same.

By now, our older son, Daniel (who is 25) and his girlfriend, Remie had come back so Hugo had new 'toys' to play with. He seem to readily take to the idea of giving a paw and sitting down on command so we feel he could be quite easy to train. He is also very keen on food, particularly ours which might be used as an incentive.

Bed time came and Hugo seemed quite happy to stay downstairs so Martin and I left in him on his blanket. However, both boys had gone out and arrived home at separate times, in the early hours of the morning and this obviously disturbed him. Early on Sunday morning, before 6am, I heard him move around and knowing he was used to an early start I went down to let him out. He was overjoyed to see me and kept cuddling in to me for a fuss, although he seemed a bit timid and I soon discovered why. Unfortunately, he had had a couple of accidents so I quickly cleared up without making any comments  and we then we went out in to the early morning sun to have a refreshing game of fetch and catch. The boys are now under strict instructions to always let Hugo out in the garden when they come in late.

He feels like part of the family already!
